Daiso Japan opened its doors in downtown Vancouver on April 1

The Japanese variety store Daiso has opened its doors in downtown Vancouver, B.C.

Daiso Granville Street (located in downtown Vancouver) is the first directly operated store in Canada by Daiso Sangyo Co., Ltd. (Hiroshima, Japan), and brings the same unique gadgets and items sold in Japan.

The store is located at 810 Granville Street, which is only a few doors south of Robson Street. Additionally, it is just a 5-minute walk from Granville Street Station and City Centre Station, and is easily accessible by public transit.

Daiso Granville Street offers over 12,000 different items, including seasonal items, stationary goods, kitchen items, cosmetics, and consumables, and they plan to add new products regularly.

On April 1, 2021, the first customers who made purchases of $30  (before taxes) got a free Daiso goodie bag.

To reduce the spread of COVID-19, Daiso is following the regulations of British Columbia. This includes providing hand sanitizer, making sure they do not exceed the maximum number of people in the store, and keeping physical distancing requirements.

Many items are sold at $2.25.

According to its corporate website, Daiso has 3,367 stores in Japan and over 5,000 stores worldwide (as of March 2019).  Daiso also claims that while they are often called “the Japanese dollar store,” their cute, “kawaii” designs and unique value simply cannot be compared to other dollar stores.

Metro Vancouver used to have a Daiso store at Aberdeen Centre in Richmond, operated by the Fairchild Group as a franchise. However, in August 2019, it was switched to an OOMOMO store. OOMOMO carries Seria and other Japanese dollar store products.
